Dr. Couñago is Associate Head of Radiation Oncology at Quirónsalud Madrid University Hospital, Madrid, Spain and adjunct physician at Hospital La Luz.
Dr. Couñago studied medicine at the European University of Madrid Medical School (Spain) and completed his residency in Radiation Oncology at the Princesa University Hospital in Madrid (Spain). He is Professor of Radiation Oncology at the European University of Madrid Medical School, the Spanish School of Radiation Oncology (EEOR), and the Master’s program in Thoracic Oncology at the CEU Madrid University. He is the director of the Master's degree in Thoracic Cavity Neoplasms at the Alfonso X El Sabio University.
Dr. Couñago is the coordinator of the Spanish Oncological Group for the Study of Lung Cancer (GOECP) and a founding member of the Multidisciplinary Research Group for Radiation Oncology (GIMOR). He is an active member of several other Spanish research groups, including GICOR (Radiation Oncology research group), URONCOR (the Urological Tumours Working Group), and GETICA (Spanish Group of Immuno-Biological Therapies in Cancer).
As principal investigator, he has initiated and conducted several clinical studies to evaluate the role of multiparametric MRI and PET/CT on treatment decision-making in prostate cancer. He has presented more than 80 papers at scientific conferences, published more than 50 articles in indexed international journals, and routinely participates in multiple national and international research projects. He is co- editor of the international journal World Journal of Clinical Oncology (WJCO) and Reports of Practical Oncology and Radiotherapy (RPOR). He is a reviewer for numerous journals, including the WJCO, RPOR, Clinical & Translational Oncology; Radiation Oncology; and Cancers. His clinical interests include prostate cancer, lung cancer, hypofractionated stereotactic body radiotherapy, multiparametric MRI, PSMA PET/CT, molecular markers, and combining radiotherapy with molecular targeting and immunomodulatory agents.
