Dr. Marchetti, tumor and molecular biologist, is an international authority in the characterization of patient-isolated Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs), CTC biomarkers, and CTC testing implementing “liquid biopsy” concepts as clinically useful tools to combat cancer metastasis. With keen insights into the biology of brain metastasis, he pioneered discovery of CTC signatures underlying brain metastasis and biomarker properties of brain-homing/brain-associated CTCs (Science Transl. Med., 2013; Nature Comm., 2017; Nat. Rev. Clin. Onc., 2017; along others).
As a consummate scientist, Dr. Marchetti’s bibliography include 185 publications of which 79 are in peer-reviewed journals in the fields of neuroscience and oncology. He has received numerous awards and secured uninterrupted funding for 28 years from federal, state, institutional and private agencies. He is a reviewer for the most prominent journals in cancer research and sits on numerous editorial boards. He also acts as Guest Editor of special issues on brain metastasis and CTCs as cancer diagnostics biomarkers. Further, he serves/d on grant reviewing panels of NIH of USA and Italy, US DoD-CDMRP, and is frequently invited as reviewer and consultant for national and international agencies.
Dr. Marchetti graduated from the University of Pavia (Italy) in 1979. He worked as postdoctoral fellow at the University of Illinois-Chicago (1980-1982), University of Texas Medical Branch – Galveston (1984-1986). He then became research scientist at the University of Texas-Houston (1986-1991), Research Associate and later Instructor at MD Anderson Cancer Center (1992-1999), Assistant Professor at UT-Houston (1999-2001), Associate Professor and later Professor (with tenure) at LSU-Baton Rouge (2002-2007), endowed “Jack. L. Titus” Professor (with tenure) at Baylor College of Medicine (2008-2015; now Visiting Professor), and Professor and Director of the Biomarker Research Program Center at Houston Methodist (2015-2019), prior to joining the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.
